What is an extended cab vs crew cab vs regular cab trucks?
These days pickups are everywhere. The times when pickups were built only for work are long gone. Modern trucks can be optioned to be as opulent as the iconic brands in luxury. There is a truck for you, no matter if you want to cruise in style or require a workhorse. Once you decide if you require 4WD (or if RWD will suffice), the next big decision is to figure out what cab type is best for you and your needs.
A regular cab pickup truck features just one row of seats with very limited storage space and legroom, as you might guess. A regular cab truck was once the only configuration available on pickup trucks. In many regular cabs, the seats nearly touch the rear of the cab. This model is the more practical version of a truck and can usually be ordered with manual locks and windows. A regular cab is a work pickup truck, not to haul family and friends.
As one could probably guess, an Extended Cab truck (occasionally called a Double Cab ) is just a Regular Cab with extra room behind the front seating. When first introduced, extended cab trucks were sold as 2-door models and only had small jump seats in the back. These days they may be called a Double Cab truck, these trucks now have second-row doors for access to the rear cargo area. Despite having 2 rows of seating, an Extended Cab pickup truck wouldn’t be the ideal option for long trips, even if it can haul more passengers.
While maybe not as clear as the other cab versions, a Crew Cab pickup has four normal-size doors and the room to hold your whole ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickups are made to carry more of the driver’s stuff and people. For some people, these pickup trucks have replaced the bland 4-door sedan as the family vehicle. A Crew Cab pickup’s bigger size and powerful engine choices are not seen in the 4-door sedan segment while still being able to provide the luxuries and legroom that families need.
