Bob Howard Honda invites you to understand more about damaged gas cap signals.
The 1st of many symptoms of bad gas caps is probably going to be a gas cap that will not tighten completely or a loose gas cap. This may seem insignificant at first, but without an air-tight seal, the fuel system can be exposed to grime and dirt. If the gas cap isn’t closing properly, check the gasket to make sure it isn’t missing or brittle. If you drive an older car, be sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can contribute to the gas cap issues and may even require purchasing a replacement from the original manufacturer.
What concerns can a non-secure gas cap cause? How about a check engine light? A non-secure gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can also allow fuel vapors to escape. These fuel vapors can produce an error in the emissions system, which would light up the check engine light. Dirt and Grime that gets into the fuel tank can also contaminate the fuel injectors. Perhaps the most common sign of a bad gas cap is the gasoline smell in your vehicle.
If your car was not built with a capless gas tank, it’s not recommended that you drive without a gas cap installed. If your vehicle is a little older, there is a chance that fuel could escape from the gas tank during aggressive corners or spirited driving. Driving your car without a gas cap can also lead to reduced gas mileage because the fuel could evaporate without a fully-sealed gas tank. The smell is the fuel evaporating from the gas tank, which causes reduced fuel economy.
If you’ve already inspected the gas cap, the problems you’re having may be due to contaminated fuel. If a car, truck, or SUV has trouble starting, won’t accelerate, or just isn’t running right, then you might just have a contaminated tank of gas.
If your vehicle does not feel normal and you aren’t sure if it has a bad gas cap or just bad fuel, bring it in, and our trained service technicians will diagnose the problem and fix the problem.
